Additional Information: This monument represents the men and women of the Omaha Police Department and their families. Since 1887, this organization has served and protected our community in order that we may all live in a free and safe society. It is with respect and appreciation that the citizens of Omaha honor these dedicated people. “We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice made to protect our lives and freedoms.” The base is inscribed with names and dates of police officers killed in the line of duty.

World War II 50th Anniversary Heartland Memorial , 1996

Additional Information: This memorial honors those Americans who left the security of their country and loved ones to protect the freedoms and human rights of all people. The memorial depicts the following four scenes: Returning Soldier with Children Rosie the Riveter Young Boy Gathering Scrap Metal Farm Family with Folded Flag Thousands of paving bricks line the walks at the memorial site. Bricks were donated at $25 each to help fund the memorial. Bricks are engraved with a name or message that remembers a loved one or friend, a fallen veteran, a memory of a special time or place. The final group of bricks was placed October 1998.

Additional Information: The task of bringing Chef Boyardee to life fell to Omaha sculptor John Lajba. Chef Boyardee isn't a cartoon or a corporate creation, Lajba said. “He was a human being.” Parents and grandparents might remember when the man himself appeared in most of the brand's television commercials. Hector Boiardi — he went by “Boy-ar-dee” because it was easier for Americans to pronounce — was a hotel chef and restaurateur before he opened a packaged Italian foods company in the 1920s. Boiardi died in 1985 at 87. ConAgra Foods acquired the company in 2000. Lajba used many photos of Boiardi for reference. “He was a man who had a lot of class and a lot of charm.”
